Characteristics for Identification

There are many characteristics that will help you to determine information about a vessel and give you hints as to when and where it was created.

  • Color of the clay
  • Decorations--if there are any and what type
    • Painted slip designs
    • Carved lines or textures
  • Technique for building the vessel
    • Wheel thrown 
    • Hand built
  • Size and form of the vessel
