The Bible is a library, or collection, of books traditionally recognized by Jews and Christians as the Word of God. For Jews, it is comprised of the Old Testament (i.e. the written Torah, or Tanakh). For Christians, the Bible is made up of both the Old and New Testaments, the latter written following the crucifixion and resurrection of the Messiah, Jesus Christ.
In order to find specific texts in the Bible you will need to be familiar with the Biblical books (Wikipedia has a nice list here). Chapters were added to the biblical books in the 12th century, and verses in the 16th, in order to facilitate navigation. In sum, Book chapter: verse. Therefore, Genesis 1:1 refers to the first verse of the Bible in the first chapter of the book of Genesis. John 3:16, the "Gospel in a nutshell," is one of the most famous biblical passages.
