Inserting Citations in Microsoft Word

  1. Download the Microsoft Word plugin.
  2. Open the Mendeley application.
  3. In Microsoft Word, select the "References" tab. The third section of the toolbar should say "Mendeley Cite-O-Matic."
  4. Click "Insert Citation." Use the search bar that appears to search the sources you saved to Mendeley, and click on the source you want to cite. (You can also open the application from here to see more details. If you open the application from here, a button will appear at the top of the Mendeley application that says "Cite." Click this to insert the citation into Microsoft Word.)
  5. To add page numbers to your citation, click on the author and year that Mendeley generated. Type in the pages and hit "OK."
  6. To edit a citation, click on the citation you want to edit. The "Insert Citation" button will change to say "Edit Citation."

Generating Bibliographies in Microsoft Word

In the Mendeley Cite-O-Matic toolbar, click "Insert Bibliography." This will create citations automatically from the in-text citations you inserted earlier. If you add another in-text citation, it will be automatically added to your bibliography.

Mendeley defaults to APA style. You can change this at any time, and it will automatically change both your bibliography and your in-text citations.
