Ensuring that the Library is a safe and effective space for Concordia's students, faculty, and staff is our first priority. While we generally welcome members of the public to use the Library space, some spaces and services are only available to members of the Concordia community and its affiliated organizations.

The following policies govern the use of the Library space.

In addition to the policies outlined on this page, users of the Library building should be aware of and follow all relevant CSP policies.

Distribution & Preservation

You are granting Concordia University, St. Paul (“Concordia University”) the perpetual non-exclusive, royalty free license and right to reproduce, migrate, loan, and distribute the Work worldwide for non-commercial purposes, in any format, including electronic.

You agree that Concordia University may, without changing the content, migrate the Work to any medium or format for the purpose of preservation, conservation, or distribution. Concordia University may keep more than one copy of this work in more than one location for the purposes of security, backup, and preservation.

Concordia University will take all reasonable steps to ensure that an author’s name remains clearly associated with their work(s) and that no alterations of the content are made by the University or a third-party. However, Concordia University cannot restrict the access, download, and subsequent duplication of any work submitted to Digital Commons@CSP, with the exception of the Embargo and Restricted Content policy stated below.

Nothing in this agreement is intended to alter an author’s claim of copyright of his/her work, no matter its location or format.

This agreement does not supersede or replace any existing agreements you may have with third-parties to reproduce, migrate, loan, and distribute your Work. You represent that you have the right to grant Concordia University the rights contained in this agreement.

Copyright

You have the right to publish your Work in any format without permission from Concordia University. Authors retain copyright for all content submitted to Digital Commons@CSP unless they explicitly give it away to a third party.

Concordia University will not seek nor claim copyright on a Work submitted to Digital Commons@CSP unless Concordia University held or had a claim to copyright to that work prior to its submission.

You represent that the Work is your original work. You also represent that the Work does not, to the best of your knowledge, infringe upon anyone’s copyright.

If the Work contains material for which you do not hold copyright, you represent that you have obtained the unrestricted permission of the copyright owner to grant Concordia University the rights required by this Agreement. Any such third-party material must be clearly identified and acknowledged within the text or content of the Work.

In the event of a future dispute over the copyright to work submitted to Digital Commons@CSP, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless Concordia University and its employees or agents for any use of the Work authorized by this Agreement.

Privacy & Confidentiality

You are responsible for addressing privacy and confidentiality issues in your work prior to submission. You are responsible for the proper redaction of confidential content before submission. You are encouraged to speak with your advisor and Concordia’s Institutional Review Board (https://www.csp.edu/institutional-review-board-irb/) with any concerns you may have regarding the privacy and confidentiality of human subjects.

If privacy concerns are identified after a Work has been made publicly available, the site administrator is empowered to restrict access to the Work temporarily. This person will then consult with the appropriate departmental chair, dean, or administrator in order to determine a course of action regarding future access.

Embargos & Restricted Content

Embargoing a work prevents its access by the public and members of the University community, typically for a specified amount of time. Embargoes of up to 2 years are possible for content submitted to Digital Commons@CSP, but not encouraged. Questions regarding the embargo process as well as the consequences of embargoing a Work should be addressed to digitalcommons@csp.edu.

Restricting a work limits its access to members of the University community. Some content may be restricted at the discretion of the site administrator or appropriate University administrator. Questions regarding restricted content should be addressed to digitalcommons@csp.edu.

Requests for the embargo or restriction of a particular Work are handled on a case-by-case basis and must be made independently of the Work’s submission to Digital Commons@CSP. Please direct these requests to digitalcommons@csp.edu.

Removal of Content

Digital Commons@CSP is a permanent archive of scholarly material. As such, Concordia University retains the right to preserve permanently any Work submitted to Digital Commons@CSP. Under some circumstances a Work may be removed from public view and a note will be added to the public record indicating its removal. The descriptive data for all Works will be retained and available for viewing by the public. Requests for the removal of a particular Work should be made in writing to digitalcommons@csp.edu. The request for removal of a Work does not guarantee its removal.

Last reviewed/updated: November 17, 2021

Electronic Materials

The vast majority of the Library's collections are available in electronic format and can be searched and accessed from the Library's website. Users will need to log in using their Concordia email address (ending with @csp.edu) and password to access electronic materials.

Due to licensing limitations, alumni and community members cannot access the Library's electronic resources.

All users of the Library's electronic materials are expected to abide by the University's Acceptable Network Usage policy.

Checkout Periods

Current Concordia students, faculty, and staff as well as alumni and ordained ministers of an LCMS-affiliated congregation may check out an unlimited number of items from the Library. The checkout period for books is 120 days with the option to renew the checkout for an additional 30 days. Most media items (audio, video) can be checked out for 60 days with the option to renew the checkout for an additional 30 days. Some materials may have shorter checkout periods.

Requesting Materials

Physical materials can be requested from the Concordia Library or partner libraries in OneSearch using the request button on each book's detailed display page. Requested materials will be held behind the Info Desk for two weeks.

Items requested from partner libraries:

Current students, faculty, and staff can request items from a partner library using OneSearch. These requests are known as interlibrary loan. Items requested through interlibrary loan can take significantly longer to arrive. In addition, items requested through interlibrary loan often have shorter checkout periods. Please be mindful of the date these materials need to be returned. You can request a renewal of an interlibrary loan item, but the renewal request may not be honored by the partner library.

Alumni and LCMS pastors cannot request materials from partner libraries. Please utilize your public library to request materials from another library.

Checking Out Materials

All materials taken from the Library need to be checked out at the Information Desk on the main floor of the Library.

Requested materials will be held at the Library's Information Desk for two weeks. Current CSP students, faculty, and staff will receive an email notification that their materials are available for pick up. This email notification will be sent to their official Concordia email address (ending in @csp.edu).

Current students, faculty, and staff will need to present their CSP ID to check out materials. Alumni and LCMS ministers will need to be issued a Library account before they can check out materials. Inquire at the Info Desk.

Renewing Materials

Most checked-out items can be renewed so long as another user hasn't placed a request for the same items. Renewals may not be available for items borrowed from partner libraries.

Items can be renewed through OneSearch.

Users have the following options for returning library materials:

  1. In the book drop box, immediately inside the Library's front doors during the hours the Library is open.
  2. To another library (public or academic) that is open and accepting returns.
  3. Hold onto the materials until the campus/Library is more generally accessible to you.
  4. By mailing them to the following address. The Library will not pay for return postage.

Attn: Library Services
Concordia University, Saint Paul
1282 Concordia Avenue
Saint Paul, MN 55104

Fines and Fees

The Library does not charge fines or fees for lost materials. However, all efforts should be made to return items on time.

Intro

Course-specific tutoring and writing support are available to all current Concordia students. Support options are available on the Tutoring & Writing Support website at https://library.csp.edu/tutoring-services.

Availability of Tutoring

Tutoring availability varies by semester. We place an emphasis on providing tutoring for introductory-level, undergraduate general education courses, but Academic Support staff will attempt to find peer tutors for most courses for which a request is made.  Please be aware that it is often not possible to find a peer tutor for every class and/or upper-level (200-400) courses. We will attempt to find a peer tutor for each request made; however, we cannot guarantee one.

Limitations on Tutoring Support

Student interactions on the Brainfuse online chat-based tutoring platform are limited to 16 hours of tutoring per month.

No Show Policy

Three no-shows for scheduled tutoring sessions will result in a loss of the ability to schedule future tutoring sessions until the student has a meeting with the Assistant Director for Academic Support Services.
