BIO 130: Biology II Diversity of Life

Use this guide to find articles for your Article Review assignments.

Keywords and Search Terms in Biology

Searching in the library's databases depends on the keywords or search terms you use. First, break your topic into about 2-3 keywords. Mix and match different combinations of keywords to get different results when searching. Be creative in thinking about what affects your topic or the relationship between biological concepts.

Try words that describe your main Bio concept. Also, think of synonyms, related concepts, common vs. scientific names, and other terminologies you use. For example:

Research question: What is the effect of bacteria on depression symptoms?

Possible keyword combinations to use for searching:

  • Gut bacteria AND depression
  • bacteria AND gut health AND mood
  • Gut microbiome AND mental health
  • microbiota OR microbiome
  • gut-brain axis
  • modulation (think of verbs or actions used on a concept, for example, using modulation on microbiota)
