Faculty

Recommend a Tutor

Please fill out the Faculty Recommendation Form for any students you think would make a good tutor. This form asks instructors to evaluate a student's strengths and takes approximately 5 minutes to fill out. Please note, at this time we primarily hire undergraduate students to be tutors.

Successful applicants for the subject tutor position:

  • Have a strong passion for tutoring and learning.
  • Have excellent communication skills.
  • Are personable
  • Display a commitment to service and helping others
  • Have received at least a B in the course(s) they want to tutor for or an equivalent course at a different university.
  • Possess excellent study skills and time management.
  • Demonstrate great patience and resilience while working through difficult tasks or situations.
  • Are able to maintain at least 6 hours of tutoring availability per week.

Faculty recommendations are an important factor in deciding whether to hire a student to be peer tutors. Other factors include the student's application, the strength of their in-person interview, and the current need for tutoring for the course the student is applying for.

A student might not be asked to become a tutor for a variety of reasons. For example, there might not currently be a need for tutors for the course the student wants to tutor or the budget might not allow for it. Some applicants apply too late in the semester or can't maintain enough availability in their schedule to become a tutor. Because of this, we cannot guarantee all students recommended by faculty will be hired as peer tutors. We will, however, always encourage an excellent candidate to reapply for the position in the future if we are not able to hire them currently.
