Citing with Author/Date Style

Author/Date Style

Author/Date style is very similar to other citation styles (such as APA) in that the author, date, and page number are enclosed within parentheses within the text. Full citations are then available in the reference list at the end of the paper.

Make sure your professor wants you to use this instead of the notes/bibliography style.

One to Three Authors

When there are one to three authors, list them all in both the in-text citations and the reference list.

Watch out for another difference between in-text citations and the reference list. In-text citations only include the authors' last names and have no punctuation after them. Citations within the reference list include the authors' entire name and a period at the end. 

In-text Citation Format:

...(First Author's Last Name and Second Author's Last Name Year, Page).

In-text Citation Example:

...(Wright and Hope 2018, 42).

Reference List Format:

First Author's Last Name, First Author's First Name, Second Author's First and Last Name, and Third Author's First and Last Name. Format the remainder according to source type.

Reference List Example:

Wright, Tom and Bradley Hope. 2018. Billion Dollar Whale: The Man Who Fooled Wall Street, Hollywood, and the World. New York, NY: Hachette Books.

Four or More Authors

If there are four or more authors, include the first author's name in the in-text citation followed by et al. For the reference list, you can list up to ten authors without using the et al. abbreviation. If there are more than ten authors, the reference list citation should include the first seven names followed by et al.

In-text Citation Format:

...(First Author's Last Name et al. Year, Page).

In-text Citation Example:

...(Patel et al. 2018, 78). 

Reference List Format:

First Author's Last Name, First Author's First Name, Second Author's First and Last Name, Third Author's First and Last Name, etc. Format the remainder according to source type.

Reference List Example:

Patel, Vikram, Jonathan K. Burns, Monisha Dhingra, Leslie Tarver, Brandon A. Kohrt, and Crick Lund. 2018. "Income Inequality and Depression: A Systematic Review and Meta‐analysis of the Association and a Scoping Review of Mechanisms." World Psychiatry 17, no. 1 (2018): 76-89. https://doi.org/10.1002/wps.20492.
